A group of islands ruled from two capital cities The Canary Islands actually have two capital cities, which are Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria which are located on the two largest islands in the Canary archipelago, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. These capital cities together share the governance. Each of the seven major islands that make up the Canary Archipelago is ruled over by a council which is named Cabildo Insular.
